Belle da Costa Greene (1879-1950) was librarian to J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913). This painting of her by Paul César Helleu was done ca. 1913. She later became the first director of the Pierpont Morgan Library. Edgar was introduced to her by Helen Parkhurst who encouraged his interest in interpreting Shakespeare. Miss Greene loanded him original folios to study.
